Confirmed, Kinect is essential. Kinect makes some games playable that wouldn't be without it. Kinect makes game play!
Also, it should be noted your console doesn't just become a paper weight when the disc drive breaks. Having access to digital content keeps game play going. So its logical to say no physical discs is essential.
