I think ps3 falls well short because the ps3 will decline in sales rapidly over the next 12 months just like the Wii did after Wii U came out.

The only big Wii titles in the 12 months before the WiiU launch were "Xenoblades Chronicles" and "The Last Story"... what an appropiate name ;)

If you take in account, that both games were late localisations of their nearly 2 year old counterparts, the Wii support ended in November 2011 with "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword".

And if you want to play old Wii classics again, you have the option of a Wii console OR a WiiU console.

Now let's look at the last 12 months of the PS3 before the PS4 launch:

11/2012: Hitman Absolution

12/2012: Far Cry 3, The Walking Dead (Full Season), Mass Effect Trilogy

01/2013: DmC: Devil May Cry, Ni No Kuni

02/2013: Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Dead Space 3, Skyrim Dragonborn + Dawnguard, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Crysis 3, Star Wars Pinball

03/2013: Tomb Raider, BioShock Infinite, God of War: Ascencion, MLB 13: The Show, Mass Effect 3: Citadel, Darkstalkers Resurrection; Battlefield 3: End Game, Terraria

04/2013: Guacamelee!, Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall

05/2013: Metro: Last Light, Grid 2, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, Resident Evil: Revelations

06/2013: The Last of Us, Remember Me, D&D: Chronicles of Mystara, Hotline Miami, The Walking Dead: 400 Days, Pool Nation

07/2013: Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Edition, NCAA Football 14, Stealth Inc.

08/2013: Dragon's Crown, Tales of Xillia, Saints Row 4, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Madden NFL 25, Spelunky

09/2013: GTA 5, Diablo 3, FIFA 14, NHL 14, Pro Evo 2014, Rayman Legends, Puppeteer, Beyond: Two Souls, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Lone Survivor: D.C., Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate

10/2013: Batman: Arkham Origins, Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed 4, NBA 2K14, Skylanders Swap Force, The Wolf Among Us, Lego Marvel Superheroes, Rocksmith 2014 Edition, Magrunner: Dark Pulse, F1 2013

11/2013: Call of Duty: Ghosts, Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea, XCOM: Enemy Within

after the PS4 launch: Gran Turismo 6, Need for Speed: Rivals

announced: Assassin's Creed Liberation HD, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z, The Lego Movie Game, The Raven, Lightning Returns: FF13, Earth Defense Force 2025, Ragnarok Odyssey ACE, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, Tales of Symphonia Chronicle, Thief, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, Dark Souls 2, Atelier Escha & Logy, Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD, The Witch and the Hundred Knights, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, MLB 14: The Show, Lego: The Hobbit, Minecraft, Persona 5

Quite a better support for the PS3 than for the Wii. A few of these games are already in the Instant Game Collection, many others will follow and prolong the interest in the PS3 platform for a few years.

And as long as the PS4 has no backwards compatibility, the only option to play a good share of these games (and many other PS3 exclusive games) is on a PS3 console. Even the announced Gaikai-streaming of PS3 games will be no option for many households without a very fast internet connection.

PS4 owners with PS+ but without a PS3 can add the PS3 titles additionally to the PS4 titles to their Instant Game Collection... after another price drop some of them will be tempted to get a low priced PS3. So will many PS3 owners if their device gets broken in the next years.
