It wasn't the controls that made them relatively lackluster (in fact some of the controls were pretty good, excepting the rolling control) for me, it was their restrictions on combat and exploration. I consider them to be really good puzzle/action-adventure hybrids, to be honest, but as only action-adventure games there isn't much to please. Spirit Tracks was a bit more interesting than Phantom Hourglass in that area. ALBW has everything balanced, and gives you the freedom to do whatever you like.
