Indeed, there was a study done comparing calorie intakes of people who drink diet coke vs people who drink regular coke (I believe it was a proper study, not just "pick up people, ask them which one they drink"). The ones who drank diet coke (which has far fewer calories) actually consumed more calories per day than the ones who drank regular coke.
