-Micro transactions in most free games
-Really bad controls for RPG and some action games.
-The games are bad quality, gameplay-wise, I guess the low price somehow justifies it.
-Lost potential for console/pc gamers.
-Those who buy smartphone games usually buy every next game in a series, ultimately leading to lazy developed games that add nothing, really.
There's some good games though... But it's just not a good platform to play games on. It would be way more viable to develop on the eshop of Vita/3DS which has physical controls + touchscreen if needed, all your games in one place, and actual gamers. It would move many smartphone gamers to handhelds, and those who don't care about dedicated gaming devices probably don't even pay for the games on their phone anyway. iOS/Android is a quick cash grab, developers are encouraged to be lazy since even mediocre games could be selling well depending on the marketing.
on a side note: I haven't touched iOS shop for awhile, are games like angry birds and Infinity blade as popular as they were? Is the market slowly dying, with other apps like Instagram and Snapchat probably eating people free time?
