2014 WCS changes - How Blizzard are improving professional StarCraft 2

Comment

Here at the sharp end of the 2013 eSports calendar, we can start to see what the next year of StarCraft will look like. In the past few weeks we had the WCS Global Finals, the DreamHack Winter StarCraft 2 Finals, Red Bull Battle Grounds, IEM Singapore, and the finale of the World Cyber Games. It’s been a packed schedule, but also a diverse and entertaining one.

It’s also hopefully a sampling of what awaits us next year as Blizzard make some much-needed and long-awaited changes to their World Championship Series. If they bear fruit, we should have a 2014 competitive season that is easier to follow, more enjoyable to watch, and features a more diverse set of tournaments and players.

Metro: Last Light DLC guide

Comment

WIth Metro: Last Light going on sale today, it’s worth looking at the grab-bag of DLC associated with it. While all of it is pretty cheap, time is not, and only some of Last Light’s extra levels are really worth investigating. Some of these DLC packs are cringe-worthy, the kind of schlocky, half-baked ideas that give DLC a bad name and make things like season passes a bad value. On the other hand, some it is almost inspired, adding some of the systemic depth that Last Light’s campaign lacked.

So as you consider the Steam Autumn Sale, and are looking to return to the Metro, let’s look at what’s actually worth your time.

Boo, Towerfall Ascension. Boo. That’s what I say to your purely offline multiplayer. Well, that may be too harsh but, still, it’s rare that I can get four friends round to share a single screen. It’s much easier to amass a group online.

However, it’s hard to stay angry at Towerfall for too long, what with all the added content we’re getting with the PC release.

Minecrafting 125: House of Chests

Comment

Snapshot 13w48a landed this week, bringing a bunch of bug fixes like not being able to take screenshots of chat or inventories, misaligned textures, and various problems with the newly-added Twitch streaming capabilities. Shortly afterwards, we got 13w48b, fixing a few other bits and changing how you get out of Minecarts.  Nothing tremendously exciting.

Instead, all the action has been going down in the community. For starters, congratulations are in order for Curseforge on gathering together 500 Minecraft mods. We weren't that impressed by what the 500th mod actually was, so if you're making a nifty Minecraft mod, you might want to go list it there.
