I think we can take Etho's pics of his own Brazilian PS4 as proof that the claim that not one PS4 was sold is grossly untrue.
The $4000 price was clearly crazy, but it doesn't seem like that's the price people are actually playing, even in retail outlets with warranty it's more like $2300,
which is roughly on par with what Xbone is selling for there as well... If that price difference had held I was assuming that PS4 would simply lose the mass market there, but it seems like they are doing fine.
I think Sony can't just drop their own retail price because they already declared the customs classification as games console (with higher rate),
but other vendors are free to call it a computer (at lower rate) because... hey, it has a web browser!, isn't that what most people use computers for?
That could in fact be the reason behind the price differential between Sony's official price and MS', Sony just didn't think to game the tax classification system and so they got the high rate, while MS was gaming it from the beginning.
Kind of ridiculous that people were out denouncing Sony as greedy (as if jacking the price up 100% wouldn't REDUCE their sales and game profits) when it was clearly down to tax classification, and other vendors are selling PS4 at equivalent rates to Xbox.
I know even domestic products have significant VAT added on, but starting from the $2300 price,
what should the price drop to once they can begin domestic production, i.e. only local tax?
Although by the time they can begin local PS4 production, they may also be ready for a design 'refresh' with lower price by design.
Only once it reaches that lower price can a real mass market begin to be talked about in Brazil (vs. the 'spoiled' or lucky few), but Sony has said that they expect to be able to drop prices more quickly than last gen.
(While otherwise similar, I suspect MS' production prices for Kinect just won't drop as much, and they can't re-engineer that easily without changing it's perormance parameters, which is a no-go)
Are Brazilian produced PS3's (or other products) able to be sold in other MERCOSUR countries at a lesser taxed rate equivalent to domestic products? In theory supposedly, but in reality?
