Err...  Physics says differently.  Doesn't matter if you take points on 2D image and blur them in and out to simulate depth perception, it's still a flat plane.  Out of focus photographs don't feel 'far away', just out of focus.

Wake me when colour holography becomes reality.

 

You could program an engine that gives the illusion of focus if the eyes are directed at a certain object. it will just render whatever you look the correct way. Depending on how much your eyes focus. Its a trick but did you ever see it in a working system ? If not you can not dismiss the possibility of it being good enough one day to fool us.


But if thats not good enough for you, what about directly projecting light into the eyes with millions of tiny Lasers. There would be no difference to real life if you can perfectly manipulate them.
