They have also reduced the lag to astounding 20ms and less in several prototypes. Which will help alot in reducing nausea same with positional tracking which will help alot to cure the disconnect between your senses. Skyrim is not optimized for the Rift and its visible all the proportions are off you move too fast etc etc. Its undeniable that its an inferior VR experience right now still impressive but 5 hour sessions are too much. But the potential of a consumer rift combined with optimized software is sky high and lets any 3D technology look like a joke in comparison.
Edit: On the tiring issue your eyes will not tire as they are in a relaxed natural state focused on infinity while using the rift. The problem with the rift is the nausea and the resolution not the eye strain. |
The tiring comes from the disparity between stereo cues and focal cues. I imagine it will be the same with Occulus rift, everything is in focus at the same distance while the stereo cues try to convince you they're at different depths. Yeah low resolution (spread out over 100 degrees, 1440p is probably still low) and a slight delay when turning your head are probably worse.
Skyrim was just an example, a space sim or racer seem better suited to the tech. I'll risk nauseea and fatigue for that. I just hope I won't be amongst the ones that get a migraine headache after use.
