Because installing a game needs cpu and memory ressources that can't be taken from X1 if a game needs those ressources. And most importantly, you need a CPU (ARM) and memory to control independantly the HDD access to store the data. So Except if X1 does have a dedicated CPU + ram (which we know from the tear-down is hasn't), then X1 never will have the play and install by default. It can be emulated by game developers of course, but then it will take some ressource from one of the 6 CPUs reserved for the game. |
Ah. That was one of the other (or is it main?) functions of that extra 256MB of DDR3 RAM.
I've noticed there are several functions that can now run in the background unlike on the PS3. Like downloading while playing an optical disc, whether game or video, which was a limitation I learned to live with.
