But it hasn't natively for all games like PS4. I guess some first parties will program some CPU ressource to install while playing but it will not be for all games, whithout any supplementary work for the devs.
Because installing a game needs cpu and memory ressources that can't be taken from X1 if a game needs those ressources. And most importantly, you need a CPU (ARM) and memory to control independantly the HDD access to store the data. So Except if X1 does have a dedicated CPU + ram (which we know from the tear-down is hasn't), then X1 never will have the play and install by default. It can be emulated by game developers of course, but then it will take some ressource from one of the 6 CPUs reserved for the game. |
I'm well aware both consoles are partially installing data and allowing you to play before the process is complete. However, in my experience it appears both are doing it differently. In the case of the PS4 it appears to install a tiny fraction of the title before you are able to play, often before significant portions are installed, including game modes and high res textures. The XB1 on the other hand is taking a different approach. First thing it does is checks for, and downloads any updates. After than it begins the install. Unlike the PS4 it appears to install a lot more content before allowing you to play. All game modes operational etc etc. Yet with both consoles, in my tests, total install times seem to largely mirror each other.
Is one implementation worse than the other? No, I don't believe so, unless you're seriously pushed for time in which an extra ten minutes or so is a total deal breaker.
I wonder if MS is able to alter their process to allow XB1 users the same short install times PS4 users are currently enjoying?
