Part of the reason software sales are going down in recent years is because publishers do a damn good job of making 1 game that, with continued support, keeps players entertained until the next iteration is released.
This is very unlike the way the market was 5 years ago, and is partly why publishers are moving more towards ways to monetize gamers once they're in the game (dlc, micro transactions). Expect more of it.
