I haven't fallen into deficit on lives yet, but then i've only been getting the green stars that i stumble upon. To that end, i'm stuck at the castle in world 7 being 32 stars short of what's required, so i'm trying to go back and do all the stages i skipped.
They do, indeed, do a much better job of slowly ramping up the difficulty. A few of the stages i've run through so far qualify as legitimately tough.
