I know. But the N64 controller was the first I used. And where the analog was postioned was push forward for forward. Pull thumb right for right and so on.
With DS controllers your left thumb ( Or what I call directional thumb in games ) is sitting on the stick at an angle. Meaning forward is a wierd diagonal push forward with your thumb. Watch someone playing a racing game on Xbox then on PS. On PS they are often meaning to do full left or right but often doing diagonal upper left ( which wont give full 100% lock ) or diagonal down right. Its not to important with FPS or others because theres not to much variation in the level of lock for example. But you can clearly watch someones Thumb doing it. Even on verteran PS players.
