Closer to the top? There are no other big franchises with sequels from Sony below it apart from Infamous (only 2 games), sports titles like MLB and a few casual titles. It's nowhere near close to the top, it's close to the bottom. You have to take into consideration the expectations, marketing and size of the games. Comparing a title like Killzone 3 to PS All Stars or Starhawk for example is meaningless, the difference in production costs and resources is gigantic. Guerrilla Games is the second largest team out of Sony's 17 production studios. A studio 1/4 its size sold twice as many games last gen (MM). Arguing if it's their 4th or 5th right now, is rather redundant. It may be 4th or 5th at this very moment in time, but why look at a static picture? There's data available for the past 7 years. We've yet to see the legs of the new KZ and of course the upcoming impact of the rest of Sony's ww studios efforts. Also, some franchises that were seeing fatigue last gen (ala Ratchet or LBP) may actually see a resurgence of interest on new hardware. I agree with them needing to deliver a good game. Just perhaps not a Killzone game. |
I would use exactly that point against you and your list of Sony exclusive franchises. Ratchet & Clank may have higher overall sales this past gen, but 3 last games in the series were flops, same with Motorstorm which had the benefit of being a launch title which inflated its numbers, Resistance the same, last games in both those series underperformed heavily compared to their prequels. Killzone's sales although with only two games stayed consistent 2.91 for KZ2 and 2.5 million for KZ3, even though a slight decline is nothing compared to 1.32 vs 2.37 for Resistance and 0.38 vs 1.26 in the case of Motorstorm. Both of those latter franchises are also pretty much good as dead at this point. Sony said themselves they have no plans for Resistance after Burning SKies, Evolution Studios have DriveCLub in development now, no word on Motorstorm recently. So I would hardly classify them as bigger than Killzone.
I also fail to see we could expect a big resurgance in Ratchet don't see any indication for that, LBP is in my opinion pretty healthy, no need for resurgance, but I can imagine fatigue if they won't change the formula for the PS4.
I agree with your second paragraph though.
So it is happening...PS4 preorder.
Greatness Awaits!
