FES is the upgraded version of Persona 3 with an epilogue chapter.

That's pretty much exactly what I'm doing now. I can't really recommend which order you play them in. I preferred playing Persona 4 Golden first because I think it's the better game, and it was my introduction to the franchise.

You can only controll all of your party members in Persona 3 Portable, in both P3 and P3FES they are auto-controlled and you just give them basic tactics (heal, knock down, etc).

I have old FF games that I have already bought, so I may play those first if Persona 3 isn't as amazing as 4

Even if this announcement is Persona 5, it's going to take ages to come out and come to the UK, so I have plenty of time especially with the lack of new Vita titles
