Local multiplayer doesn't mean as much to me anymore because all my real friends have grown up. When we get together its to have a beer and wings, watch the game, etc. It's rare that we get together and play video games (actually, never anymore). A little sad, but that's how life goes. I think much of the crowd in their late 20s / early 30s and beyond has grown up. I still like nintendo, but they NEED to fully embrace online play, I'm sorry.
That and kids these days, at least in the states around my area (Cleveland), seem to play more Xbox 360 than Wii / Wii U. So it is a bit of a troubling trend for Nintendo, and trust me I love the company. Yeah I get they have survived for X years doing things their way, but time are REALLY changing this time around. Lack of 3rd parties giving a damn puts them in a tough spot.
I know that when I buy a Wii U, that money is almost strictly spent to then have the right to buy NINTENDO games. Just sayin.
