EverQuest Next Landmark Twitch livestream shows a castle being constructed

EverQuest Next Landmark was shown off during an SOE livestream on Twitch a few days ago, and if you missed out on it like I did, you can rewatch it below. In it, director of development Dave Georgeson, community manager Colette Murphy, and senior producer Terry Michaels chat about the Landmark Founder’s Packs and show off the building tools as associate producer Eric Smith constructs a castle live in-game. The free-to-play title ties into EverQuest Next and neither have been dated.

TowerFall Ascension Bringing Co-op, New Everything To PC

By Nathan Grayson on November 16th, 2013 at 3:00 pm.

True story: during IndieCade, I walked past Ouya’s tent, and a good 50 percent of it was taken up by massive TowerFall stations. They were facing out of the tent, obscuring the remainder of the tarnished wondercube’s lineup like some massive fun planet eclipsing a dying sun. The metaphor for the state of the platform, as you can probably tell from that simile, was palpable. But it’s OK because everything’s still amazing on PC, and we’re getting the biggest, best version TowerFall has to offer (along with PS4 or whatever I guess). TowerFall Ascension will offer a new co-op quest mode, 50 new levels, and countless new items. Sorry Ouya. Maybe don’t try to prevent huge audiences of people from playing games next time. Karma and all that.

Continue? Stars A Game Hero Making Peace With Deletion

By Nathan Grayson on November 16th, 2013 at 1:00 pm.

The game’s full name is actually Continue?9876543210, but fitting all of that in a headline would’ve required a piston-powered clamp, a really big hammer, and a shrink ray. This one looks magnificently fascinating, though. You might recognize the Swords & Sworcery-esque art style from the surprisingly solid Skrillex Quest, which developer Jason Oda also infused with his glitchy sensibilities. Continue, however, is far less tongue-in-cheek, aiming for heavy heartstrings over light and flighty giggleboxes. You play as a recently deceased videogame hero wandering a world of Random Access Memories. Ultimately, you will be deleted, but as you wander a fraying, pixelated landscape behind the scenes of our favorite games, your goal is to find peace.

World Of Cubecraft: Rift Dev Introduces Minecraft-Like Trove

By Nathan Grayson on November 16th, 2013 at 10:00 am.

OK, upon second viewing, Rift and Defiance developer Trion’s Trove looks more like Cube World than it does Minecraft. A lot like Cube World. Kind of eerily so. But I suppose it can’t be avoided now that the MMO genre’s been bitten by the voxel bug and– actually, wait, yes it can. EverQuest Next is voxel-based too. Hmmmm. Oh well, enough making block mountains out of block molehills. The truest measure of any game – visual similarities to genre heavy hitters or not – is in how it plays, and while Trion has a framework in place for Trove, that part will largely be up to you.

Alpha Centaurish: Pandora: First Contact Out Now

By Graham Smith on November 15th, 2013 at 8:00 pm.

I first heard about Pandora: First Contact when an RPS commenter linked to it as being ‘maybe a bit like Alpha Centauri’. Except that’s not true, because I’ve since remembered that I first heard about the planet-settling turn-based 4X game when frequent RPS contributor and friend-o-person Dan Griliopoulos updated his LinkedIn profile to mention he wrote for the game. Now the game is out.

To prove that this relationship doesn’t impact on my ability to be a hard-hitting journalist, I put tough questions to Dan about the game, and I’ve included his responses along with the launch trailer below.

Blizz On World Of Warcraft’s Procedural Future, Warcraft IV

By Nathan Grayson on November 15th, 2013 at 3:00 pm.

By most estimates, World of Warcraft is now 17 million years old. Typically, Internet scientists carbon date it by slicing open expansion packs and counting the rings, but there is some controversy surrounding that method. One thing’s certain, though: WoW’s been at the top of the MMO food chain since before man invented either food or chains. Its age is starting to show, and even Blizzard’s willing to admit that. And while WoW: Warlords of Draenor is working its time travel magic on the MMO kingpin’s dry, cracked landscapes, it’s still fundamentally the same game. But could that change someday? Well, WoW will probably never morph into EverQuest Next, but Blizzard told me that it’s definitely looking into procedural and user-generated content to revitalize its slowly withering world.

League of Legends video breaks down the changes coming in the new season

Comment

It’s difficult to get a handle on all the changes Riot are making to League of Legends ahead of the new season. We know they’re focussing on the support role, jungling, and refining the flow of Summoner’s Rift but frankly we need a little help understanding the full effects of those tweaks and balances.

Luckily Riot’s on the case, they’ve released a preseason rundown video to explain the broad strokes of what they’re doing.

Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade footage shows bloody executions and smiling Canadians

Comments4

There is only war in the universe of Warhammer 40,000. That’s been the mantra of the series since its inception and it’s a philosophy that’s embedded in Behaviour Interactive’s upcoming MMO. Although it takes design notes from Planetside 2, with a set of factions ceaselessly warring over the same planet, the first footage of the game in action shows it’s going to be a much bloodier affair.

I mean, I can’t remember seeing anyone sawed in half with a chainsword in Planetside 2.

Arauna2 Introduced – New Path Tracer Engine That Uses Nvidia’s CUDA

Our reader ‘ihatedisqus3′ has also informed us about a new path tracer engine called Arauna2. Arauna2 is the successor to the CPU-based Arauna real-time ray tracer. It uses GPU path tracing to render scenes with global illumination and depth of field, at a speed that enables real-time previewing: during camera movement, images are noisy, but as soon as the camera stands still, the final image starts to converge.
