Thank you for fixing the thread.
College is a good idea, trade school would also be a good idea, or really even just joining a local club or community, like a church, a real-life gaming community, or a volunteer group of some sort. Making friends is easy if you know the right places to go (and/or have the right places in your area, but Chicago is about as big as you can get in the U.S., so you should have plenty of options).
It doesn't have to be college if college isn't right for you, though that could certainly help.
