Except it is a smart move since as you even said it'll help the game sell more overall meaning more profits overall. Also it gives the 3DS a big game when there otherwise wouldn't be any big games for it in 2014, atleast from what we know currently.

The point I'm trying to make is, while, yes, the game's sales will profit from being on both systems, Nintendo overall won't. It is more crucial for Nintendo that Wii U sells than that this game sells even more than it would being only on one platform, as more Wii Us in customers hands means overall game sales will increase instead of just an increase in sales for this one game.

Now you could argue that the 3DS will sell more because of this game, but, honestly, I don't think that there is need for this game in order for the 3DS to sell, as it has a lot of compelling games on it's own, which Wii U kinda does not (yet).

Basically, Nintendo would profit more from highly increased Wii U sales than having the increase split between Wii U and 3DS (even if the combined increase for both systems would be higher than the increase it would cause for Wii U were it an exclusive).

I also believe that, would this game be exclusive to either platform, it would sell more systems of that particular platform, hence why I believe that the game's system selling capabilities are diminished by releasing it on both. The point you are getting on to is that, overall, it will sell more systems than it would have being exlusive to one of them, and while that is true, I point back to my argument that, in my opinion, Nintendo needs Wii U sales more badly than 3DS sales, thus rendering the higher number of Wii U sales more important than a higher number overall, but a lower number for Wii U itself, making this a not so fortunate decision in my book.

On another note: While I'm referring to the 3DS and Wii U version as one game at the moment, I hope (and believe) that they will be different enough to actually warrant looking at both individually. Sadly, even if this will be the case, the general public will refer to it as one game. Otherwise that would be a best-case-scenario.
