I'm afraid Sony is mandating it at least for 1st party developers, to you know, "sell" the feature, just like with sixaxis at the start of this gen. It will fade away with time, and I agree it's just a gimmick.

That's what worries me. The touch pad should only be used if the developers find a unique way to put in into the game. Suckerpunch is just using it to replace button prompts.
