Actually, based on the "Most Wanted" data for the first 11 months of the year, most hyped title was The Last of Us. It came out halfway through the year, but there was a LOT of hype for it. And Killzone isn't even the most anticipated PS4 game. That would be FF15. Killzone came in 12th place overall, just below Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and 3rd place of PS4 games, behind Infamous: Second Son. Still, it WAS the most anticipated PS4 launch title, by far. |
I said hype for 2013 game release, not anticipation for closetonextdecade game. FF15 will be a 2018 release (my estimation).
Admitted, TLOU is the only game which topped the perceived KZPS4 gamingforumshypescore for 2013. TLOU was hyped before but imo even more AFTER its release because some PS3 owners AND most reviewers loved it to death, and after release some TLOU fans created threads to celebrate each new outstanding score. TLOU would never have sold more than 3 million copies if the review scores weren't as good as they are. The TLOU post-release hype actually proves the point this thread hopes to disapprove: People may like it or not, but quite a few die-hard gamers actually DO care very much about review scores of anticipated games (no matter if launch title or not), i.e. it wouldn't surprise me if the - for today's bloated industry blockbuster game standards - lukewarm KZPS4 metascore will cause the post-release hype/appreciation to die down much quicker than the one for TLOU.
Another example: If Beyond: Two Souls had a metascore of 91 instead of 71, it would probably have sold 2 or 3 times as much as it will. Mediocre metascore hurt the sales and decreased post-release discussions (especially in comparison to Heavy Rain which was discussed for months post-release), a high metascore would without a doubt have increased the sales numbers.
