Hint: An awesome game from a well known series that released on a Japanese system, It was released later on a portable gaming console! Collecting hearts was a part of its gameplay mechanics!

I'm going to go with Riviera: The Promised Land. First Released on Winderswan colour then GBA, and I think there is something about hearts in that game.

That or Persona 2, the one that didn't localize on PS1, but was localized for PSP.
