That's the short version of it. I don't see what's wrong. Catering to masses generates the most revenue in all streams of entertainment. There are still hard, challenging and aggravating games available (Souls series) for those that want it.
Problem is considering how much you hear about Demon/Dark Souls on the forums and such. They are relatively niche as far as mass market is concerned and that's okay for them. So, as a developer you have to pick who you are making the game for.
