That is what i thought aswell.
I had this thing happen to me on my Xbox 360 controller after a few years of use. The one on my PS2 and PS3 just lose the rugged surface with time and become smoother. Never had pieces fall off though. Whatever it is, i hope its taken care of if its a problem.
I wont be buying mine until late next year at best, so i am confident the issue will be solved by then.
