Hmm. I remember playing this on the NES. I wonder where it was, then. I had SMB3 and a collection of like 40 games (which included SMB1)

You could play it as a mini game in 2P mode.  If you clicked A while the other player was playing against you in multiplayer, you could challenge them to a round of Mario Bros.  If you won (either they die or you get more coins than them) you stole their turn.
