Thanks CGI-Quality! I think it helps sometimes to know what we are looking for and appreciate what we are getting.
Here is a short video to support an explanation of advanced tessellation coming in next gen consoles. You can see the rock wall in the older version, but when you bump it up - every little rock has it's own form, and cast an extra shadow. Notice the dragon - it looks nice, but when you use the advanced tessellation - boom! extra points, spikes, and textures everywhere. Every extra texture also cast it's own shadow - it should help stop that 'floating' look some characters have in game (Thinking of Read Dead Redemption.)
Also, a rope might look nice, but when you zoom in – or you tune walks by – it looks like a pipe painted to look like a rope. With the advanced tessellation it will keep getting sharper looking as you zoom in – like our real eyes do – you will see the folds and the fibers. So things will not look fakey when you get close to them or just move around.
It is a tremendous amount of extra load on the rendering resources. Using advanced techniques, they can make it small enough that it can actually run on today's hardware.
Looking forward to the next parts of the series.
