I don't want to make any specific claims, but for awhile I have believed that many "crusaders" against violent videogames (as well as other topics) are actually people who demonstrate extreme cases of reaction formation.
For those that don't know, reaction formation is a defense mechanism described by Freud where a person who has socially unacceptable thoughts takes on a public persona in opposition of those thoughts; someone who has homosexual thoughts will be overtly homophobic, and a violent person may become a animal right's activist (or a violent videogame "crusader").
In an odd sort of way these people become remarkably well known for their efforts and can have very successful careers in public office. Often their secrets become known and the contrast between their public and private life makes for quite a scandal; a politician who crusades against gay marriage may end up being caught with a homosexual prostitute, a man who campaigns on family values has several affairs, and a man who attempts to protect children from adults is caught "picking up" teenagers.
