And how is the Vita any different? How did Sony not play it safe? They upgraded their multi-media gaming device. It got no where near the sales the PSP did because it was unnecessary

Nintendo's strategy with the 3DS was not playing it safe. Nor was their dangerously bad execution of it The WiiU and the 3DS are both upgrades that are meant to carry on the spirit of their last generation systems.

The Vita was a far bigger change from the PSP than the 3DS was from the DS P: Massive graphics upgrade, 2 cameras, OLED touch screen, dual analog sticks and a rear touch pad. I personally prefer the 3DS as it's game line up is waaaay ahead, but the Vita was certainly more "innovative" compared to it's predecessor.

Would you care to explain how the 3DS wasn't a safe bet? Because from what i can tell they made a grand total of one risk, and even that came with an off slide :P Take away the visual upgrades and the 3DS is a DS with an analog stick (which is perfectly fine, because the DS was incredible).

I disagree pretty strongly with the notion that the PS Vita was a far bigger change from the PSP than the 3DS from the DS.
Your differences with the PS Vita vs the PSP are rather weak.  2 Cameras?  The 3DS has the same difference with the DS.  OLED touch screen?  I think you should just say "touch screen" as OLED is being phased out.  Dual analog sticks?  The 3DS has a circle pad while the DS didn't.  An equivalent difference from the PSP (having a circle pad thingy as well).  A rear touch pad?  Sorry, but I don't see there being many uses for that.  It may be more innovative than 3D, but not by very much.
So, no... not really at all.  The 3DS hardware has a good bit more than what you think in differences to the DS.  The jump from DS to 3DS is big, while the jump from PSP to 3DS isn't as big, and there is no denying that there was a bit of a closing of the gap with (PSP vs DS) vs (3DS vs PS Vita).

There is 1!!! and I've found it... In little big planet you use the touchscreen to push blocks into place and gears into machinery but if you want to push the gears back out of the machines to stop them you tap on the back touch screen to push it back towards you and stop the machine :o Ok this isn't a game changer but it felt like a really clever idea the first time you do it. (said this 1000 times tho, vitas OLED screen attracts fingerprints far too much to want to use it during "core" games)

Rest of your post is nail on the head right tho. I was going to reply regarding the psvita being a game changer because it has double the analogue sticks of the psp whereas the 3ds has infinately more than the DS :D even has double that again if you picked up the Circle pad pro for Resi evil or MGS3d
