I dont really believe trends can be broken down over a decade a part. Nintendo games has always had a high attatch ratio so it is a given it will sell well.
Melee in general was just flat out better than the original which increased its overall numbers. On the other hand Brawl is listed as the inferior version of the two but it was also highly anticipated with at the time the most popular console in the Wii. Not only that, but the Wii was on the market for a lot longer than the GC giving it extended legs.
Smash Bros 4 is also highly anticipated but it doesnt have the same thing going for it with the WiiU compared to the Wii. I tell you what I'll make a bet with you that Smash Bros 4 (On WiiU) will not outsell brawl because im fairly confident with this assumption. Im not even entirely sure it can outsell melee at the moment.
