@bolded: My sentiments exactly. Galaxy and 3D Land/World are what I prefer for Z-axis Mario.
Don't get me wrong; I did love SM64 (it was hard not to) and a true sequel would still be something I'd look forward to, but the essence of Mario's gameplay is platforming that just works better with a linear design in mind, IMO. This is why I appreciated Banjo so much - it never had its roots in 2D design previously.
Zelda's gameplay translates beautifully to 3D, but if Nintendo wants to do an open world 3D platformer, how about a new IP? (hint hint)
