It's an idea designed with the Japanese in mind. To that end, it likely should have been less prominent, as Nintendo's strong suit in home consoles is actually North America.

You´ve mentioned an important point.Home consoles have been selling far more in the rest of the world than in Japan, for a loooong time now...so why is it Nintendo continues to 'R & D' home consoles with Japan as priority and the places that actually buy them as second thought?

Wait a second... what indicates that the Gamepad was designed specifically for the Japanese market?

That it's primary utility seems to be off-TV play, which isn't an issue in most non-Japanese households which are going to have more than 1 TV.
