I don't understand this "inner Picasso" argument. The vast majority of the games Nintendo makes these days are sequels to successful franchises. I doubt that the Pokemon devs, or the Mario devs, or the Zelda devs, have much freedom to make many games outside of Nintendo's existing, successful franchises. We certainly aren't seeing it. They don't have any more freedom then Retro does, and the argument could easily be made that these devs are only making these games because Nintendo told them to.

The only real exceptions are X (which appears to be a sequel of Xenoblade from Monolith) and Platinum Games, which isn't even a Nintendo developer. These two developers are the closest Nintendo has to a "Picasso", and they make up a very small amount of Nintendo's overall output.
