Kudos to it.
Sadly, I think it'll be a long time until Wii-U passes in Japan/Europe. Europe seems like a lost cause at the moment (although there's a potential to turn it around, I think there's a market for cheap home consoles here); and Sony has brand momentum here. Japan is going to be a massive uphill battle since it's handheld territory; and Vita seems to be getting decent support.
Still, not to take away from this achievement, it's a good job. Vita is unfortunately not a console that Americans want, and will exist as a niche machine at best; while Nintendo have a legacy in the USA which I'm sure will be helping them. I reckon USA will be a stronghold for the Wii-U.
