IGF 2014 attracts record entrant numbers

The next Independent Games Festival will be quite a doozy, as organisers have announced yet another record-breaking round of entrants. 656 games have been submitted for the main competition, up from last year’s 589, which was at the time the highest number of entrant to date. The festival’s award show is using a different format this year, dropping the Technical Excellence category to allow for six finalists in each category. The IGF Awards take place during GDC in San Francisco in March.

QWOP A Load Of This: Probably Archery

By Craig Pearson on October 24th, 2013 at 6:00 pm.

“This is hard. Hard and stupid.” You are correct, Probably Archery. You are both those things, because that is your reason for existing: to be hard and to be stupid. Probs Arch, as I like to call it, is another of that breed of games that gives you an intimate level of control over bits of your body. In this case, you manipulate both arms independently, while swiveling wrists, and adjusting elbows and shoulders. I think it’s a game of archery, but the ambiguity of the title means I’ll have to check out the demo before making a definitive statement.

SPACECOM Wants To Deceive You On Steam Greenlight

By Graham Smith on October 24th, 2013 at 4:00 pm.

The next year may end up bringing us X: Rebirth, Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen, each one a more staggering depiction of outerspace than we’ve ever seen. But for all their graphical eye-kisses, there’s still room in my heart for cold blue circles against a background of deep black. That’s what SPACECOM looks to offer: a multiplayer strategy game about deception with a clean, futuristic aesthetic.

It Is The Future, The Year 2001: An HD Startopia Gallery

By Alec Meer on October 24th, 2013 at 3:00 pm.

Hello, faithful word-consumer. Would you care to also consume images this day? I have been replaying post-Bullfrog outfit Mucky Foot’s wonderful 2001 management game Startopia, which recently saw a re-release on Steam (as well as having been on GoG for some time prior to that). It took a bit of fiddling, but I managed to get it running at 2560×1440 with a ton of anti-aliasing and, well, my God. It’s absolutely beautiful to behold despite its 12 year vintage. Partly that’s down to judiciously characterfully artwork and a strong sense of scale, partly it’s because the game has an uncommonly liberated camera, able to go pretty much anywhere. I’m no Dead End Thrills, in a great many ways, but I’ve rounded up a collection of screenshots which somewhat demonstate how breathtaking this game is at high resolution. I really do think you should take a look.
