That one's not true at all--ever heard of the Game Gear, N-Gage, Neo Geo Pocket, or Jaguar? All the other reasons you mentioned, I agree with, but it's just not true that they had no competition. It's just that they wiped the floor with them so badly that people THINK there was no competition.


Lynx, not Jaguar. You can also add the Wonderswan to that bunch.

The Turbo Graphix 16bit handheld in 1989 (looked like a black gameboy but had full colour and backlit) The Zodiac was another the Sega Nomad(a portable Sega Genesis the size of a gamegear you could play sega Geneisis games on the go and when you wanted connect it to the TV and play) Game.com (from tiger and introduced PDA like funcions and touchscreen and could connect online)
