I think its more of an admission that the Wii U gamepad and the casual market that made the Wii popular are both on the decline/already dead. Lets recap.

Ditching NintendoLand in favor of Mario and Luigi
Game and Wario, game that showcases the gamepad well... flop
Wii U Party, abysmal reviews, almost no advertising from Nintendo, delayed the 3DS version to not outshine it
Wii Fit U, comes out next week, no advertising
Just Dance 2014 (pretty much all ubisoft casual games ...JDK, Rabbids Land, ESPN Sports Connection, Your Shape etc, ), all former shadows of themselves

It could be related to the systems ultra-low, PSV type hardware sales!!!  None of the hardcore games have sold any better either.  I seriously think that once people try Nintendo Land (funny there isn't a demo for the game for people to try on the stations) they would understand the Wii U better.
