| RolStoppable said: What the hell is this? It's a 3DS eShop title, costs €4 and has quite a lengthy demo available (first eight stages, progress can be transfered over to the full game). Witch & Hero is a simple defense game that is oddly addictive. The protagonists aimed to defeat Medusa, but lost and the witch got turned into stone. Now the hero is on a quest to lift the curse which unsurprisingly involves killing Medusa. Each stage is only one screen big with the witch positioned at the center. You control the hero and have to defend your partner from the enemies that approach from all sides. The stage ends either once you've defeated the boss monster(s) or if the witch's health drops to zero. Combat is similar to the Ys series, meaning that you don't press a button to swing your sword, but instead just run and bump into the enemies. Unlike in Ys though, you will always lose a bit of health. This dooms you to get knocked unconscious eventually, but you'll be back on your feet after a couple of seconds. Therefore "dying" at the right time becomes a strategic part of the game. The hero also prepared himself well for the journey. He seems to have eaten for weeks in advance, so he moves hella slow. Enemies take more damage when you attack them from behind and in turn you take less damage. They drop EXP, gold, blood and occasionally chests which can contain all of the aforementioned things or healing items which will be used upon touching them. The blood is used to temporarily restore the witch. She'll cast magic for a few seconds, either storm (weak, but covers the entire screen) or fire (a strong line attack that is controlled by rotating the witch with the L and R buttons). You can switch between the two magic attacks at any time with the X button. Once you've completed or failed a stage (failure cuts EXP and gold gains in half), you should pay the shop a visit to increase the following attributes: attack, defense, speed, storm, fire. EXP only improve the HP of your characters and the MP of the witch. About halfway through the game you learn a special ability that is charged up by hitting enemies or the witch getting hit. A press on the Y button activates a sort of god mode that lasts for a few seconds. It's best used when you get knocked unconscious, because it instantly gets you back into the game. You (the hero) have unlimited health, you are more powerful and the witch also casts more powerful magic than normal. The game's presentation consists of 8-bit graphics and sound. It doesn't fool around and has no problem to throw 50+ enemies at once at you in the later stages of the game. After defeating Medusa, you unlock a time attack, survival and hard mode. Verdict: Controls: Good. Final Score: 7.1/10 There isn't much to this game. It's always the same thing. Run in circles, kill stuff and protect the witch whose name you'll learn to pronounce with a "B". Failure in your quest is imminent, but upgrading your gear motivates you to come back for more. |
The bolded part reminds me of Dragon Quest VIII where you loose half your money if you get wiped out.
