Super Bread Box Takes Vlambeer’s Super Crate

Box Back To The C64 Era

In the beginning, there was Super Crate Box. A static-level arcade shooter by Vlambeer about collecting crates and kicking ass (sometimes your own if you have the disc gun). And now, well, now there’s Super Bread Box by Paul Koller, which has now launched in its full 64KB edition on the Commodore 64, which is available for a download at £1.99.

 

Super Bread Box is the C64 port of Super Crate Box, and last year it was developed for the2012 RGCD 16K C64 Game Development Competition and managed to win. This year it’s been expanded to include the entire Super Crate Box content, as well as three new C64 exclusive levels, and extra characters from other modern C64 and indie games. As you can imagine, this is pushing the old C64 to its limits.

What you might find even more surprising is that there’s online scores! How? Easy. The game generates a code for your highscore, and then you can type it into the website to appear on the leaderboards. But some more groovy information (because information can definitely be groovy) is that Eirik Shurke’s Super Crate Box soundtrack has been transformed into SID-Chip renditions so that you can party on down with the full on C64 tunes.

What I love about Super Bread Box is that it should really be a demake, considering that it’s designed to run on much older hardware than the original Super Crate Box. Instead, it has more content than Super Crate Box, which is just insane. Obviously the graphics aren’t quite as sharp, but the game itself seems to run very smoothly as you’d hope for such a fast-paced, action-packed game. But none of that could have been simple to achieve.

“Grab your baseball cap and loosen your pants, it’s time to fight endless hordes of enemies and collect every weapon crate you can. Prepare for an arcade delight with tight controls, refreshing game mechanics, cracking retro art and a terribly hip chiptune soundtrack.”

I suppose that there’s a bunch of you wondering how you can play Super Bread Box, and I’m afraid to tell you that you’re going to need a Commodore 64 to do so. If you weren’t aware of that, you may now be a bit bummed out. If you are part of the C64 scene and still have one knocking about, then you can add another game to its library. Super Bread Box comes in a few different forms.

 

You can buy the game from the RGCD store in three different flavors:

  • A REAL Commodore 64 cartridge, boxed with stickers, a poster, manual and other goodies (£30).
  • As an A2/A3 poster & download bundle (£5).
  • Or as a download (£1.99).

And if you’re truly bummed out that you can’t play Super Bread Box, there’s always Super Crate Box, which is just as dapper and available for free, or as a paid version on the App Store.
