If the game is a big enough deal the company making it will do what they have to in order to get it to the platforms they want it on and in some cases the company will prefer to run their own. A lot of Xbox fans were smirking when it was revealed that the X1 version of CoD: Ghosts would have dedicated servers and they thought that it meant their version was superior. That the PS4 version would lack such server support. Now we know that the PS4 version will also have them. So it seems that Activision didn't care if the PS4 was lacking "300,000 servers". Do you honestly believe EA will NOT run its own servers for Titanfall for PS4 if it has to? Ofcourse they will. PS4 is going to be a huge deal worldwide. The "Power of the Cloud" has yet to be displayed despite all the claims. We have not actually seen a single example of how Microsoft's cloud computing platform made something possible on the X1 that would have been impossible without it and required the large investment. It really has been all promises up to this point. |
First I believe you have to understand the type of developer we are talking about. Respawn is not a large developer with huge capital that can just run their own servers. They pretty much stated this during the first reveal of Titanfall. Dedicated servers are a cost and this was mentioned by Respawn that the cost is what they eat not EA. I believe people forget that this is EA partners that Respawn is using which is a different type of publishing relationship. This is not an EA game, its a Respawn game where EA is the publisher. Who knows what cost EA or even Respawn will eat to provide the same level of service for Titanfall on other platforms. Its already been reported that the 360 version will not use dedicaed servers. The only reason the PC version is usinng dedicated servers is because Respawn is using MS servers to host the game for the PC.
As for COD Ghost, we know that MS is providing dedicated servers for their system but I am not 100% sure about the other platforms. This statement stands out to be something on the same level as what Killzone is doing.
""Dedicated servers will be used on current gen, next gen and PC with Ghosts. And, in order to make sure that people have the best possible experience regardless of platform, location or connection, Ghosts will be using a hybrid system of dedicated servers and listen servers. So no matter where you are the game will always be trying to give you the best online performance possible."
Its not real clear if dedicated servers are going to be used for actual hosting of games code and logic or just a hub like this statement from the GG on KZ dedicated servers.
"Killzone: Shadow Fall has dedicated servers hosted in various regions around the world. These servers do not run the logic of the game – they only act as a hub between the clients, forwarding network traffic from one player in game to all other players in game. This allows people with a slower connection or strict firewall settings to play without issues. Almost all logic relating to you (e.g. moving, shooting and taking damage) runs on your local PS4, with only a very small portion of the game logic (i.e. mission/scoring logic) running on the ‘session master’, one PS4 in the game selected for its connection quality."
There seems to be some play on words which would be nice if the COD developers would come clean like the GG devs but I guess we will see when the game release how things shape up.
As for MS cloud, well the generation hasn't started yet. Who know s the impact until we see more commitment by MS and other developers to use this resource.
