The DLC doesn't explain the ending; it's just a "what happened after". You don't need the DLC to understand what is going to happen on Alan Wake 2.
The ending of Alan Wake was great, and I doubt you need to twist your head in order to understand it. I don't know why people say it left on a cliffhanger, other than Alan's last words.
The DLC provides insight about the world Alan is trapped in now, but once again, you end up on the same point like Alan Wake 1, except for the "departure" (or whatever the new book is called) novel Alan is writing now.
