Hear me out.

NPD's September report is trickling out, and it appears that VGChartz, as usual, was a bit inaccurate in places: 360 was overtracked, 3DS and Vita were undertracked, PS3 isn't quite clear but it was most likely slightly overtracked. But what stands out to me is that the Wii U was quite accurate, off by less than 10%.

I think this could indicate that its weekly numbers here on VGChartz are pretty much right. Its most recent week shows about 33k sales. With a couple of upcoming new releases to pad out this month, it could average 30k per week in the US, reaching about 120k total for October. According to NPD, that's more than the PS3 or 360 sold in May, July, or August.

VGChartz shows the 360 selling over 260k in September, but NPD's report suggests that it sold nearly 100k less than that -- an adjustment subtracting one-third of the 360's weekly sales for the past month could be coming soon. That would result in it selling about 30k the week ending October 12... a few thousand less than the Wii U sold the same week. The PS3 outsold the 360 in September, but it was also overtracked by VGChartz, so don't expect a huge upward adjustment to its sales.

It's far from a certainty, but we could at least entertain the thought. Most of the games releasing for the PS3 and 360 this month have already been confirmed for next-gen launch releases, so I wouldn't expect them to provide a huge boost to hardware sales like we saw with GTAV. Nintendo could actually be on-track to have the top two consoles in the US in October.
