We have instruments that can detect how much C14 (the radioactive isotope of the normal C12 carbon) is left in a dead body, and through some advanced math you can calculate how many years ago a creature died (because it stopped absorbing C14 when it died and C14 has a half life of 5730 years)...

...you can´t bend the laws of reality because some cave men drew pictures of some weird creatures on the wall !
