I'm actually hoping the skill level does go up quite a bit to be quite honest. I've done no grinding (just going to all the areas, which by default gets me higher levels), and I just beat the 2nd gym leader last night using only my 3rd best pokemon, which was a level 25. My best was fainted prior to the battle and I didn't even care, and my 2nd best was waiting in his ranks to be put in if my lvl 25 failed me.
Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.
