By doing literally anything? They could have distracted the thing so Korra could try the spirit calming thing again. Heck, they're both powerful waterbenders; maybe they picked up a few tips from dear old dad and could have done it themselves. It took Korra all of a minute to learn it.
All I'm saying is that they're jerks for just watching, and then leaving.
