Fair enough, as said previously it's about preference.
How could they have helped Korra, for all intents and purposes they didn't know that was a spirit and when it showed up there was no guarantee they could defeat it. They knew how powerful these spirits were, why risk their own necks?
In case you didn't know, I have a comic book called Guardians. I'm the writer/creator of it, and we have four issues out right now, with our fifth coming out soon!
