I never said you didn't play it.  I said you didn't grow up with it.  That's the difference.  You can't replicate the feeling of playing Zelda 1 when it was a truly state-of-the-art game if you didn't play it upon release.  zelda was the GTA of the 80's, an groundbreaking open sandbox of a game that allowed you to explore a world however you wanted.  It is that feeling of freedom that can't be replicated when you have dungeons structured to be played in a certain order using a certain item to solve certain puzzles.  It's like you are following someone else's fantasy adventure, not your own.  It's that feeling of freedom that makes modern GTA and Skyrim such great successes, and the lack of it has taken a toll on Zelda.

I don't think Aonuma has ruined Zelda, I think he has made some great games.  I think the Zelda team misses Yoshiaki Koizumi and his creative concepts greatly, but Aonuma makes good games nonetheless.  However, it's pretty hard to objectively argue that Aonuma has done better solo (TP, SS) than the efforts Koizumi (ALttP, OoT, MM, WW, SMG, SMG2) has been heavily involved in.  Everything YK touches is practically considered the latest greatest game of all time.

But Zelda would be well served to return to its roots a bit and allow players freedom to find their own way of doing things, and also add a little more action into the mix.  ALBW seems to be taking a stab at this, and I seriously doubt level design will flounder.  I think the designers will have to be more creative in order to accomodate different play styles and decisions by the player.

It's pretty hard to objectively argue that Aonuma went "solo". Especially in the case of Skyward Sword, which he didn't direct.

I'm referring to the other major influence on those earlier Zeldas, Koizumi.  He was behind most of the innovation in Zelda (the stories, the 3D models, the "Adult Link" design, z-targeting, the 3-day cycle of MM) before he was promoted to lead EAD Tokyo.  Oviously there is a whole team involved, but there are the Zeldas that Aonuma and Koizumi both worked on, and the ones where it was just Aonuma.
