No. I'm 99% sure this is Nintendo's vision for Mario going forward. By now, i'm pretty sure they feel the 3d mario audience is not the same as the 2d mario game audience
They're simply not the same people. Sure, there is some overlapping.
Notice how frontloaded galaxy style 3D mario games are, unlike 2D mario games which sell decent for a long time?
I believe the idea for 3D World is to get both audiences to invest in this ONE game, making it for all intents and purposes the definite Mario experience.
Yes. the first levels will be very much like 3D Land, but BAM! There comes a Galaxy style level or 10. BAM! There comes a SM64 style level or 10, and so on.
