"An overall decline in retail sales". "In stores". "In stores."

I can't take seriously any article that goes on about the decline in gaming while never once mentioning the rapid climb in digital distribution. It's simply a waste of time. Either the writer wanted to be as sensational as possible or he really doesn't understand what he's writing about.

You think digital has grown even close enough to match the 39% decline since 2008? Or that the digital titles released by publishing companies makes up for the sharp decline in physical titles? Honest questions, I'm curious.

I'll also point out that the digital side is indeed directly addressed in the article. The rise of such frames the very article (which is about the big publishers). I take partial responsibility for your misunderstanding though, as the thread title is not exactly stellar.

I love how there's this big gloom and doom article, and then only at the end they slip in the fact that the current gen has long ago peaked and matured sales-wise.

This has been an unusually long generation. Which of course leads to the question of "why" this generation lasted so much longer. I'd argue that's primarily due to the same pressures that are driving the blockbuster model: expensive development prices and lower (or non-existant) profits. Seven years of the PS3, and I believe the system is still deep in the red.

End of a gen and increasing digital.

Bit of a shallow article isn't it.

Not really.
