Sega didn't have the money to winter a down year. Nintendo can easily deal with the Wii U being another GameCube. In fact, it would probably be best if people got used to GameCube type console sales being standard. Nintendo would probably be fine with having a niche system, as their fans would still buy tons of Mario software.
